Since LinkedIn is an innovative professional (and social) networking platform, they always come out with new developments that help information sharing.

This time, there are two new features they are launching right now. Both are important changes so please read on.

One new feature that you might have come across already is the LinkedIn Signal function. This includes tweets in your update page in a searchable format. And why is it powerful? Because now you have the opportunity to search for targeted tweets in the area of your interest. You can define specific keywords that the tweet must contain (for example “hires” or “hiring”) and narrow it down to geographical area, industry etc. Based on this, you can browse among tweets offering related jobs to you and then connect with the person to discuss it further. Isn’t it great? You can access this function on your home page with the “Search updates” box – just put there your keyword.

Another change that you will see soon on LinkedIn is the Mixtent application. Here is how it works. Mixtent gathers information on your profile (from LinkedIn and other social network profiles of yours) and polls other Mixtent users you know of specific job-related questions about you and your peers. They can vote anonymously, ranking your knowledge on certain professional areas against others in the same field.

Although this can serve as a great source for personal development, its credibility is still dubious as it will not include every single person’s opinion. For example those not signing up for Mixtent cannot vote to you, thus a distorted picture can be created about your skils and knowledge.

On the other hand, the system uses this information to propose for example more targeted jobs to you. So far you received job recommendations based on keywords related to your profile’s keywords. Mixtent will make it possible to take into account other criteria as well like how well can you work autonomously or how you behave in certain office environments. The downside is again, that these information will be based on the poll results, which if not fair enough, might lead to tailoring you the wrong jobs...

The good news is – you can always opt out from using this application, once you feel you don’t benefit from it any longer. And how to access it? You will find it soon among Applications in your profile.

In case you would think "why should I bother", you'd better read this article till the end.

Because these latest changes might have an unwanted effect on you.

Facebook is just rolling out a new privacy setting called "Instant Personalization". What does this mean? That Facebook will share personal information on you with external partners. These partners will get access to your Likes and Comments and use it to create tailored advertisements to you.

This setting is set to "Enabled" by default. Here is how you can turn it off, in case you don't want data to be communicated on you:

1. Go to "Account" on the top right corner

2. Choose "Privacy Settings"

3. Choose "Applications & Websites"

4. Select "Instant Personalization"

5. Uncheck the "Enable instant personalization on partner websites" box

It's that easy. And if you are already there, have a glance at your other applications and disable all that you don't want to keep. I personally came across two applications that I wasn't even aware of how and why I downloaded, so it's good to keep an eye on these.

Oh, and one more thing - tell also your friends to disable the "Instant Personalization" function since otherwise they will be sharing information with Facebook's partner websites not only about themselves but also on you!

If you are on Facebook, probably you noticed the recent change in your profile layout. There are some who welcome this new format, they feel it is much clearer and it gives all basic information at a glance and there are also people who are rather annoyed with these changes.

While Facebook functionalities remained the same, only the layout being changed, this involves one specific change that can seriously jeopardise your career development or job search efforts - and here I am talking about photos.

We all knew that Facebook is meant to be primarily a social and not a professional networking place and is the biggest image sharing platform nowadays. With this having said, job seekers or people looking to develop their careers were made aware what a wrongly chosen photo in their profile might mean for them. (By the way, some people even use a false name or abbreviation on Facebook, to avoid being found by their current or future employer.) However, so far photos could be accessed when clicking on the relevant link in the profile.

Well, I am sorry to announce that this feature has just changed – from now on, 5 selected photos of yours are placed on the top of your profile! This means, that any employer can immediately see what you are doing in your spare time, how it looks like when you go out with your friends, can check through your family and with this find out any unwanted details on your life!

What can you do now? Well, the best is if you take some time and play around with your photos, changing their order so that those 5 would be placed on your profile that you want others to see. Avoid surprises and control any information or image that might put a negative light on you!
